From Sex, Life, & Hannah::Volume 1, Winter Season (Chapter 2: Breaking Up With Bad Habits)

We’re sitting at the small Italian restaurant on Ocean Boulevard, where Ireland works. We’re drinking red wine, and Ireland is telling me about some hot Yoga Instructor she keeps running into at the coffee shop around the corner from her place. But I’m having a hard time concentrating; my relationship with The Ex is running on repeat in my head like a tormenting home video from your childhood your parents make you watch every time you visit them.

Back then, he was a concierge at the swanky hotel in Beverly Hills, and I was lost. I walked in, and became immediately infatuated with the cute young guy in the sharp Armani suit giving me directions—and his number in case I needed help finding anything else. On our third date he told me he needed to move out of his roommate situation, so I suggested he move into my place. Two months later we got into a huge fight over something so important I don’t remember anymore, and he moved out. We got back together a week later, but never moved back in together again—not in five and a half years.

Ireland opens a new bottle of employee-discounted Chianti. The wine pours into my glass like a waterfall of despair.
